The UW Stout Adventure: AI on Campus (and Sometimes in the Vending Machines)

Other Colleges: AI Goes on Tour

It’s not just UW Stout; universities across the country are jumping onto the AI bandwagon, sometimes with all the grace of a dad dancing at prom. At MIT, students programmed an AI to compose haikus about quantum physics (the result: “Uncertainty reigns / Particles wave, then behave / My brain hurt, please send help”). Over at Stanford, AI helps map out personalized learning paths, while community colleges use automated advisors to help students pick classes without the usual existential crisis. The explosion of AI in higher education is transforming how we learn, teach, and, dare I say, procrastinate.

A Funny Tale: Marty vs. the Robo-Professor

Let me tell you about the time I mistook our new AI virtual assistant for an actual professor. I popped into Zoom for office hours, ready to impress with my burning philosophical questions, only to be greeted by “Professor Byte”—a cartoon avatar with suspiciously perfect hair. I spent five minutes trying to charm it with jokes about Plato’s closet, only to realize my audience was programmed to respond with, “That’s interesting, Marty.” I’ve never felt so out joked in my life! Lesson learned: If your professor always has the same tie and never laughs at your jokes, you might be talking to AI.

The Moral of the Machine: Adaptation, Curiosity, and Carrots

So, what’s the big lesson from all this robo-rumble? AI is here, and it’s changing higher education faster than my neighbor’s cat can knock things off my desk. But whether it’s helping us learn, making life easier, or just giving us something new to complain about at lunch, it teaches us to adapt—to stay curious, to embrace new tools, and occasionally to eat more carrots (if the vending machine tells us to). In the end, learning is about growth, and sometimes, it’s about laughing at ourselves along the way.

And that’s it for today’s mumble! As AI continues to evolve, remember: wisdom isn’t just about knowing the answers; sometimes, it’s about asking the right questions even if you’re asking a chatbot who secretly wishes it could nap. Until next time, keep mumbling, keep learning, and don’t let the robots out-joke you.

The IT department rolled out a chatbot named “BlueBot,” who’s helpful, friendly, and never, ever takes a sick day. Students use AI to practice foreign languages, schedule study sessions, and, rumor has it, even compose heartfelt love letters to the campus squirrels. One professor even joked that if the vending machines get any smarter, they’ll start counseling students about their snack choices (“Are you sure you want another bag of chips, Marty? Let’s talk about carrots!”). Why always carrots!

My Back Surgery Journey: A Tale of Triumph and Healing

Introduction: On July 2nd, I underwent a microdiscectomy at L4-5, performed by Dr. Thapar at Oakleaf Surgical Hospital. This procedure marked a pivotal moment in my life, and I am thrilled to share my experience and the remarkable progress I've made since then.

The Decision: After enduring persistent back pain and other debilitating symptoms, I decided to explore surgical options. The choice to undergo a microdiscectomy was not made lightly, but after thorough consultations and weighing the potential benefits, I felt confident in moving forward.

The Procedure: The surgery was performed by the skilled hands of Dr. Thapar at Oakleaf Surgical Hospital. Once Dr. Thapar started the surgery, it was discovered that the disc was calcified and had totally encased the nerve root. This made the surgery very tedious and required meticulous execution. A microdiscectomy involves removing a portion of the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves. I felt reassured by the expertise and care provided by the medical team.

Post-Surgery Experience: The days following the surgery were filled with a mix of anticipation and relief. To my delight, the pain at the surgery site was minimal, and the other symptoms I had been grappling with were all but gone. The success of the surgery has been nothing short of remarkable, and I am grateful for the positive outcome.

Reflections and Lessons: This journey has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, trust in medical professionals, and the importance of listening to one's body. The decision to undergo surgery was a leap of faith, but it has proven to be a transformative experience.

Conclusion: As I continue to recover and embrace a pain-free life, I am reminded of the significance of taking proactive steps towards health and well-being. My back surgery journey is a testament to the power of modern medicine and the incredible impact it can have on one's quality of life.

Finding Meaning on the Rails at the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway

You know, sometimes life has a funny way of reminding us of the simple joys, the things that connect us to a different time, a different pace. Recently, I stumbled upon a real gem that did just that, and I had to share it with you all: the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway. If you've been reading my mumblings for a while, you'll know I have a soft spot for things that tell a story, and boy, does this railway have tales to tell.

Nestled in the lovely town of Osceola, Wisconsin, this isn't just a train ride; it's a journey back. Operated by the Minnesota Transportation Museum, hopping on this heritage railroad feels like stepping into a beautifully preserved chapter of the golden age of rail travel. The railway operates on historic Soo Line trackage, and as it winds its way through the stunning St. Croix River Valley, you can't help but feel a sense of peace and wonder. Imagine the rhythmic chug of the train, the breathtaking views of sandstone bluffs, lush forests, and the sparkling river – it’s the kind of scene that makes you put down your phone and just be. It’s a potent reminder that sometimes the best views are the ones that unfold slowly, not the ones that flash by in an instant.

More Than Just a Ride – It's an Experience to Ponder

What struck me about this railway is how it caters to so many different ways of finding joy. It’s a lesson in itself, isn't it? That beauty and meaning can be found in shared experiences, quiet contemplation, or pure, unadulterated fun. Some of their popular excursions that got me thinking include:

  • Classic Coach Rides: There's a simple elegance to these journeys on restored vintage train cars. The trip to Marine on St. Croix, crossing the impressive Cedar Bend Draw Bridge into Minnesota, made me reflect on the ingenuity and effort that went into connecting communities in days gone by.

  • Themed Trains: Throughout their operating season (typically May through October), they host a fantastic array of themed rides. Think Pizza Trains (a lesson in finding joy in simple combinations!), Ice Cream Trains (pure nostalgia!), Fall Colors Tours (nature's own masterpiece, reminding us of the beauty of change), and even special holiday events like the Pumpkin Express (a celebration of tradition and family).

  • Dinner Trains: For those moments when you want to mark a special occasion or simply savor the journey with a touch of elegance, some seasons offer these wonderful options.

Why This Old Soul (and Any Train Enthusiast) Should Visit:

For those of us who appreciate craftsmanship, history, and perhaps even meticulously craft our own miniature worlds (yes, I'm looking at you, fellow model train folks!), seeing these magnificent machines in action is pure, unadulterated joy. The Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway offers:

  • A Connection to History: Getting up close with beautifully maintained diesel locomotives and a variety of vintage passenger cars is like shaking hands with the past. You can often move between cars, soaking in the different styles and learning about their unique histories from the passionate onboard hosts. It’s a tangible link to the people and stories that came before us.

  • A Glimpse into a Different Way of Life: Departing from the charmingly restored 1916 Soo Line Depot in Osceola, you get a feel for the entire operational experience, a reminder of a time when travel was an event in itself.

  • Sparks for the Imagination: The scenery, the historic equipment, and the whole ambiance are bound to stir something within. Whether it's inspiration for a creative project or just a moment to dream, it’s good for the soul.

Planning Your Own Journey of Reflection:

If your heart is nudging you to experience this, you can find all the details about schedules, ticket prices, and special events on their official information page hosted by Travel Wisconsin: https://www.travelwisconsin.com/tours/osceola-st-croix-valley-railway-203339. A little tip from Marty: book your tickets in advance, especially for those popular themed trains.

The Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a delightful pause button, a chance to connect with history, beauty, and perhaps even a little piece of yourself. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are the ones that take us back, so we can move forward with a little more wonder in our hearts.

Happy railroading, and happy mumbling!

Kathy Mattea Concert at The Gichi-Ziibi Center for the Arts

On May 2nd, my wife and I had the incredible opportunity to attend Kathy Mattea's concert at The Gichi-Ziibi Center for the Arts in Brainerd, MN. Sitting in the front row, right side of the stage, I could feel the warmth and energy of the crowd, which made the atmosphere in the theater truly electric.

Kathy Mattea's heartfelt stories about her songs and her engaging discussions with the audience added a personal touch to the concert. She appreciated the audience's presence and shared many memorable moments with us. One of the standout performances was "Ready for the Storm," which she humorously mentioned was a free song not included in the price of the ticket. This song was beautifully executed and a great addition to the concert.

Throughout the night, Kathy played all of her hits, including "Time Passes By," "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses," and "Quarter Moon." As an encore, she performed "Harley," which was a perfect way to end the evening. My favorite songs from the night were "Where Have You Been," which brought tears to my eyes, "455 Rocket," and "Love at the Five and Dime."

One memorable moment was when I was about to respond to Kathy about "Ready for the Storm" being a great song worth the price of admission alone. Her connection with the audience made the concert feel intimate and special.

The World We Can Build: Starting in Our Own Backyard

The morning news often paints a broad canvas, doesn't it? This week, we have seen headlines marking the end of an era with the passing of a significant world leader, a figure who, for many, represented a sense of global unity and spiritual connection. It is a moment that encourages reflection, a shared pause across continents.

Yet, the same news cycle carries stories of a different nature; the ebb and flow of tariffs, the complexities of trade agreements that can feel less like unifying forces and more like lines drawn in the sand, potentially driving wedges between communities and nations.

As we absorb these grand narratives, the collective mourning for a religious figurehead and the often contentious debates about global economics, it is easy to feel like mere spectators, small figures in a vast and complex world. The sheer scale of these issues can leave us feeling powerless, wondering what impact an individual can possibly have on such monumental events.

But perhaps the key lies not in trying to single-handedly shift the tides of global affairs, but in recognizing the power we do possess within our own spheres of influence. While we may not be able to directly negotiate trade agreements or influence papal succession, we have a profound capacity to impact on the lives of those around us, starting with the very people closest to us: our family and our neighbors.

This focus on our immediate surroundings extends to the very values we uphold and how we treat one another. Respecting the inherent dignity of every life, from its earliest stages to its natural conclusion, forms the bedrock of a compassionate and thriving community. It is in these personal interactions, in the way we support families, care for the vulnerable, and honor the elderly, that we truly manifest the change we wish to see in the world.

Respect for life and human dignity naturally extends to how we engage within our own communities. While the headlines may be dominated by global events, the real, tangible difference we can make often lies in the small, consistent actions we take right here, where we live. It is in these local interactions that we can truly cultivate a better world, one person, one act of kindness, one moment of support at a time.

So, how do we translate these broad concerns into meaningful local action? One powerful way is by volunteering our time. Think about local shelters, soup kitchens, or organizations dedicated to assisting low-income individuals and families. Offering even a few hours a month can make a tangible difference in someone's life, providing not just practical help but also a sense of connection and support.

Similarly, we can actively support the voiceless unborn by engaging with and contributing to local crisis pregnancy centers. These organizations offer vital resources, counseling, and support to pregnant women facing difficult circumstances, providing them with alternatives and care throughout their pregnancy and beyond. Your support, whether through donations or volunteering, can help ensure that both mother and child receive the care and support they need.

As we navigate the complexities of a world filled with both significant losses and challenging debates, let us remember that while the global stage may feel distant and our individual influence on it limited, our capacity for positive change within our own communities is immense. By focusing our energy on acts of kindness, extending support to our neighbors, volunteering our time for the vulnerable, and upholding the dignity of every life around us, we weave a tapestry of compassion that strengthens the very fabric of our society. It is in these local actions, multiplied by countless individuals, that the true and lasting betterment of our world begins, one heartfelt connection and one supportive hand at a time.

Spring Sports and Sounds: Playoff Hopes, Season Openers, and Musical Delights

The World is Wide Enjoy Some Sports

As the regular hockey season comes to an end, the excitement for the playoffs is palpable. The Minnesota Wild have had a strong season and are currently positioned in seventh place within the Western Conference. With 79 points from 67 games, they are among the frontrunners for a playoff spot. However, the team is facing some challenges with key players on injured reserve. Coach John Hynes has provided updates on Jonas Brodin, Kirill Kaprizov, and Joel Eriksson Ek, all of whom are recovering and expected to make significant contributions as the Wild head into the playoffs.

On the baseball front, the Major League Baseball season opener is just around the corner. The Minnesota Twins are gearing up for their home opener at Target Field on April 3rd against the Houston Astros. The day will be filled with festivities, including a free, ballpark-inspired breakfast, gate giveaways, and a ceremonial first pitch by Nelson Cruz. It's a great opportunity for fans to come together and celebrate the start of the season.

In the world of music

Keri Noble is set to release her new album soon, and she will be performing at Parley Lake Winery on April 25th. Keri Noble is known for her soulful and passionate music, and her concert promises to be an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend as I was hoping to, but I encourage everyone to check out her new album and support her at the concert. I guarantee it will be worth your time and the money you spend. Keri is one of the best performers I have seen in a long time, and she truly cares about the audience and their enjoyment and experience. Luckily, I was able to hear all the new songs on the upcoming album at her last concert. I cannot wait for its release.

From the world

In recent global news, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop using force in the Black Sea following separate meetings with US officials in Saudi Arabia. This development is a significant step towards de-escalating tensions in the region. Additionally, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has pledged to resist what she calls the unacceptable pressure of a "private" visit to Greenland by U.S. Second Lady Usha Vance. Meanwhile, Israel's parliament has passed a state budget, shoring up Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition. Hang on; it's going to get interesting. Don't forget to say your prayers. Include some for peace throughout the world and an end to all of the suffering. God is watching us.

Getting ready for summer

As we look forward to the upcoming summer, it's essential to prepare and make the most of the warm weather. Here are some tips to get ready for summer:

  • Clear your schedule and to-do list: Cancel unnecessary plans and delegate tasks to free up your time for summer activities.
  • Plan exciting activities: Whether it's a beach day, a hiking trip, or a backyard barbecue, make sure to plan fun and relaxing activities to enjoy the season.
  • Prepare your wardrobe: Go through your summer clothes, donate what you no longer need, and make sure you have everything you need for the season.
  • Stay hydrated and healthy: Drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, and stay active to keep your energy levels up.

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." – Michael Jordan

Now, go make it happen!

Kari Noble Album Release Concert at Crooners Supper Club

On March 8th, I had the pleasure of attending Kari Noble's album release concert at Crooners Supper Club. This concert was different from the first one I attended. The band was there, and many new songs for the upcoming album were performed. The interaction between Kari and the band members was very fun, and the added cello to the songs was a delightful touch.

The audience was very enthused, and you could feel the enjoyment in the air. Keri looked lovely and the band was definitely in tune with the location and Kari's keyboard. Her stories about the music and her life make you feel like she has been a lifelong friend. She truly cares about what the audience is feeling and that we enjoy ourselves for a few hours and forget our troubles and melt into the world of her music. The food at Crooners was very well prepared and tasty. The sound was great, and we were able to enjoy the beautiful sounds coming from the stage. The atmosphere was intimate. It was wonderful to be close enough to see the expressions on the faces of Kari and the band.

I am eagerly looking forward to the release of the new album. I enjoyed the concert immensely. Kari's habit of asking the audience for requests at the end of the show is always a highlight. Although I missed hearing "Your Home," I can hope to hear it the next time I see Kari. I would encourage anyone who enjoys her music to attend a concert. It is worth the money you spend, the time, and the talent that she gifts to us. Unforgualy I was not able to stay long after the show to thank her and the band for a great evening. Keri truly seems to care about her audience.

Marty's Mumblings, Meaning, and Life Lessons: A Night with Keri Noble

On Saturday, February 15th, I had the pleasure of attending a Keri Noble concert at the Pioneer Place on Fifth in St. Cloud, MN. With its intimate setting, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening of music and connection.

Keri Noble, accompanied by guest artist Bonnie Jasicki, delivered a performance that was both powerful and deeply personal. Before the show, Keri asked the audience for song requests, and I was thrilled when she performed some of my favorites: "Emily," "Ooh Oh," "Talk to Me," and "Your Home." The latter holds a special place in my heart, and hearing it live brought tears to my eyes. In a touching moment, Keri noticed my emotional reaction and was so moved that she had to pause briefly before continuing the song.

The audience's energy was palpable, especially a group of women who had seen Keri perform many times before. Their enthusiastic sing-alongs added to the night's magic, and Keri expressed her joy in hearing them. After the show, we had the chance to speak with Keri, and her genuine care for her fans was evident. She truly wanted to make our lives a bit happier for the night, and she succeeded.

Keri Noble's concert was a reminder of the power of music to connect and uplift. Her caring nature and heartfelt performance left a lasting impression on me, and I eagerly await the next opportunity to see her live. This was one of the best performances I have ever been to.

Embracing Failure and Learning from Mistakes: Lessons from the Baseball Diamond

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the excitement of baseball's spring training. As pitchers and catchers report to training, we watch our favorite teams and players prepare for the season. It's a perfect time to reflect on the valuable life lessons that baseball can teach us, especially when it comes to embracing failure and learning from mistakes.

  1. The Resilience of a Batter

Consider the journey of a batter. Each time they step up to the plate, they face the possibility of striking out. Yet, they do so with determination and focus, knowing that each at-bat is a new opportunity. This resilience is a powerful lesson for all of us. In life, we will face setbacks and failures, but it's our ability to get back up and try again that defines our success.

The resilience of a batter is not just about physical skill but also mental toughness. Batters must maintain their confidence and composure, even after a series of strikeouts. This mental fortitude is crucial in helping them stay focused and ready for the next opportunity. Similarly, in our personal and professional lives, maintaining a positive mindset and staying mentally strong can help us overcome challenges and keep moving forward.

Moreover, the support of teammates and coaches plays a significant role in a batter's resilience. Encouragement and constructive feedback from others can boost a player's confidence and help them improve. This highlights the importance of having a strong support system in our own lives. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe in us and provide positive reinforcement can make a significant difference in how we handle failures and setbacks.

2.                  Learning from Errors

Fielding errors are another common occurrence in baseball. When a player makes an error, it can be easy to dwell on the mistake. However, the best players use these moments as learning opportunities. They analyze what went wrong, make their adjustments, and strive to do better next time. This approach can be applied to any aspect of our lives. Instead of being paralyzed by our mistakes, we can view them as chances to learn and grow.

Learning from errors involves a process of self-reflection and analysis. Players often review game footage to identify what went wrong and how they can improve their technique. This practice of self-assessment is valuable in any field. By taking the time to reflect on our actions and decisions, we can gain insights into our strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies for improvement.

Additionally, the ability to learn from errors fosters a growth mindset. Embracing the idea that mistakes are opportunities for growth rather than failures can lead to continuous improvement and innovation. This mindset encourages us to take risks, try new things, and push our boundaries, ultimately leading to greater achievements and personal development.

3.                  The Role of a Coach

Coaches play a crucial role in helping players navigate their failures. They provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback, helping players to see their mistakes in a positive light. Similarly, in our personal and professional lives, having mentors or supportive figures can make a significant difference in how we handle setbacks. They can offer perspective and encouragement, helping us to stay motivated and focused on our goals.

A coach's role extends beyond just technical instruction. They also help players develop mental resilience and a positive attitude towards failure. By fostering a supportive and encouraging environment, coaches help players build confidence and maintain their motivation, even in the face of challenges. This highlights the importance of having mentors or supportive figures in our own lives who can provide guidance and encouragement.

Moreover, coaches often share their own experiences and lessons learned from their careers, providing valuable insights and inspiration. Hearing about how others have overcome similar challenges can be incredibly motivating and reassuring. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles and that success is achievable with perseverance and the right support.

4.                  The Power of a Positive Mindset

A positive mindset is essential in baseball. Players who dwell on their failures are less likely to perform well in future games. Instead, successful players maintain a positive attitude, focusing on what they can control and how they can improve. This mindset is equally important in our own lives. By staying positive and focusing on our growth, we can overcome challenges and achieve our goals.

Maintaining a positive mindset involves focusing on the present moment and not letting past failures define us. Players who can let go of their mistakes and concentrate on the task at hand are more likely to succeed. This ability to stay present and focused is a valuable skill that can help us navigate challenges and stay on track toward our goals.

Furthermore, a positive mindset can enhance our overall well-being and resilience. Studies have shown that individuals with a positive outlook are better equipped to handle stress and recover from setbacks. By cultivating a positive attitude, we can improve our mental and emotional health, making us more resilient in the face of adversity.

Lastly, a positive mindset can inspire and motivate those around us. Just as a player's positive attitude can uplift their teammates, our positivity can have a ripple effect on our colleagues, friends, and family. By maintaining a positive outlook, we can create a supportive and encouraging environment that fosters growth and success for everyone.

Conclusion

Baseball is more than just a game; it's a reflection of life's ups and downs. By embracing failure and learning from our mistakes, we can become more resilient, adaptable, and ultimately, more successful. As we watch the excitement of spring training unfold, let's take these lessons from the baseball diamond and apply them to our own journeys
